This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach drama and special education at a high need, low income middle school. I love teaching drama and I have recently been taking a professional development class that uses a Macbook to create movies. I would love to be able to bring what I have learned into the classroom and turn the plays that my students have been writing into small films. I would love to have access to a Macbook so that my students can create their own original films!
Middle school students love technology, and I am certain that the addition of a Macbook to my classroom will help them become more engaged in drama and the arts as a whole. I am able to use the computer that I have for PowerPoint presentations, Smartboard work, CD burning and word processing, and every time I let my students use it they are more invested in their projects. The computer I have, however, does not have any type of movie creating and editing capabilities, which I know my students would love. Movie making would give them a chance to learn a new craft and maybe discover a hidden talent previously untapped due to lack of resources. Additionally, I would be able to use the computer to burn DVD copies of their performances, ensuring that they have both memories of their achievements and evidence of work in their portfolios. It would also give them a means to type their scripts before they are acted out on film, and I would be able to professionally bind them for their own enjoyment and for their portfolios.
This one computer would impact my 200 students as well as our after-school musical theater and play writing programs. Moreover, I could obviously use it for years to come, as Macs have an incredible lifespan. This computer will undoubtedly engage my students in the arts while also teaching them important and relevant technological skills.
With one little computer, I would be giving my students the chance to take their art to the next level. I would be able to take what I have been learning outside of the classroom and show them how to create, edit and store their own movies. I am certain that they will absolutely love this project, and that I can use this computer for years to come, thereby impacting the education of my future students.
