Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This September I will start as the 9th grade Earth Science teacher at Kingsbridge International High School in the Bronx. This will be the school's second year in existence and my third as a public school science teacher in NYC. As an "international school," KIHS is geared toward educating new immigrants to the United States and we are expecting a freshman class of 125. This means that I have to be as creative as possible to educate students still learning English.
I am gearing up to teach by showing a lot of pictures and by doing a lot of science demonstrations and experiments. I am requesting YOUR help in obtaining a set of "Eyewitness" videos specific to Earth Science. I have used these videos in the past with middle school students and they were a great success in recapping big ideas at the end of a unit. Each 35 minute tape SHOWS Earth processes like volcanoes erupting and weather patterns circulating. In addition, the narrator describes multiple aspects of each given topic in a clear and slow voice perfect for ELLs (English Language Learners).
I think that with these materials and my creativity, I will be able to introduce my 9th grade scientists to their home: EARTH!!! If you can help, please show your support. Many Thanks.
