Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school serves over 750+ students. More than 50% of those students take part in the free/reduced lunch program. The school serves a wide variety of students range in all sorts of abilities. We are working towards building a more responsive, trauma-sensitive school where students are supported in learning the skills they are lagging.
Elementary students need movement and breaks throughout the day, as do all people.
Our goal is to help foster and build students who understand what their body's needs and teach the skills and tools to get those needs met appropriately, so they can be their best and do their best learning possible. All children want to do well!
My Project
The Duck Tape is needed to create patterns for each grade level to have a hallway floor obstacle course. The course can be utilized independently or as a class. If a teacher sees a kid needing a break, she can suggest he do a couple laps on the course and return. Students will be able to build their muscle strength as well as recognizing when their body needs a break or movement to help be the best learners possible. Each grade level will have an obstacle course using the tape that would be about 30-50 feet in lengths. Students will have to spin, jump, hop, balance, run, and walk to complete the courses.
Along with self-regulation, each obstacle requires the students to use motor planning skills to advance.
Classrooms will work together to create posters for the course expectations. To ensure all students are aware of what is expected, I will train a small group of students to be the leaders, demonstrating the course for their classmates. This also ensures that every student has a chance to try to course and no one gets left out.
