Students at my school are fourth and fifth graders, coming from a range of backgrounds. I teach fifth grade in a self-contained classroom. The students in my class are a diverse group of learners who benefit from movement and collaboration.
Student in my class have a variety of needs, and learning styles.
I am working towards developing a modern classroom to help support and engage each student in my class. My students would benefit from a variety of seating options to help them stay focused on their work, and to support their learning.
My Project
Balance balls have the same size and shape as yoga balls. They come with legs that allow them to stay in place when not being used by students. I am asking for two balance ball bundles. When my students are working, they can sit on a balance ball instead of a chair. Unlike a chair, the balance ball allows students to move in place. They can bounce up and down on the ball, or rock back and forth while getting their work done. This seating option allows active students to stay seated for longer periods of time and get their work done.
I have noticed that my students maintain focus for longer periods of time, and are more engaged when they have access to balance balls.
By giving my students seating choices they are able to make decisions about their learning style and take ownership in the classroom. I hope that by having more seating options in my classroom, I will be able to reach every learner and learning style.
