My students need five Yoga Ball alternative chairs when working in small group and independently. These chairs will help students stay on task and allow for movement at the same time.
As I begin my journey in intermediate elementary after 17 years in the primary grades, I've started looking at alternative ways to help my students who need extra movement. After researching ways to help my students and seeing colleagues success, I'm determined to bring this to my classroom.
I have 40 students total in my two classes this year.
I differentiate my lessons based on student need and these unique chairs will help my students that need that extra movement. I feel the novelty of not sitting in a traditional seat may encourage my students to earn rewards, such as use the bouncy ball for the day, which will keep them engaged. Our school is currently 75% free and reduced lunch and typically our school sees a lot of students come and go throughout the year. I am excited to see the results in my classroom this year and look forward to many happy faces in my classroom.
My Project
My students need five Yoga Ball alternative chairs when working in small group and independently. These chairs will help students stay on task and allow for movement at the same time. The students will use these yoga chairs at my small group table to start. I teach small group so every child will rotate to my small kidney table to use them. After watching and collecting data on which students made improvements, academically, behaviorally, emotionally, etc... I will determine who needs this type of seating arrangement at his/her desk as well. I imagine the novelty of the chairs will wear off around the holiday season but I intend on purchasing a class set of 25 by the end of the year.
I witnessed my colleague use these type of chairs in her 1st grade classroom last year and the students who needed them made gains throughout the year both academically and behaviorally.
Even though I teach intermediate this year, these students need the same types of classroom options to ensure a successful year for all. I intend on keeping the data and reporting back to Donor's Choose on all the success stories this year.
