Help me give my students more opportunities for active and engaging participation in therapy sessions with books and games that provide movement indoors and outdoors.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In my job as a third year school speech therapist, I work in a Title I School (four-year-old kindergarten through fifth grade) of approximately 400 students and a middle school of 800 in South Carolina. I provide therapy services to fifty-two third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students.
Each of my students receives speech services based on their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
Many of my students also have additional goals to address deficits such as autism, intellectual disabilities, specific language impairment, or limited English proficiency.
My challenge, as a speech therapist of these students, is to keep them engaged in their therapy sessions. This is quite a task considering such factors as their goals, their attention spans, their moods, their lack of sleep, their socioeconomic status, parental involvement, discipline, and so on. However, my students are eager to learn and to succeed!
My Project
So, what is my solution to keeping my students engaged and actively participating in speech therapy and progressing toward their goals? Movement Matters in Speech! My project is based on what we all know, kids love to move, and on research that points out that taking a movement break does not hinder achievement.
The funding of my project will allow me to purchase materials that will provide more movement, more stretching, and more dancing during my speech therapy sessions.
For example, the books that I am requesting are interactive picture books that encourage movement and getting the wiggles out! The games that I am requesting can be used for speech activities inside the Speech Room and outdoors on the playground. All of these books and games will make speech therapy sessions more fun as they encourage active participation.
The two professional books will provide lots of ideas for planning therapy sessions that have students moving, stretching, and dancing. In a nutshell, by using these materials in speech therapy sessions with my students, I will be able to meet the IEP goals of my kinesthetic learners who:
*do best when they are ACTIVELY involved
*have high ENERGY levels
*prefer to DO rather than listen
*are naturally GOOD at sports and dance
*do best with a HANDS-ON approach to learning
*have a hard time JUST sitting and listening
In advance, thank you, DonorsChoose.org for accepting my grant AND thank you to everyone for considering a donation to help me meet funding of my grant.
