We all know that some of the students we teach may not have the opportunity to further their education as college students. Some face many challenges at home and in school. However, as their teacher, I see the potential in every student.
In my classroom, I want to expose my students to opportunities that go far beyond an ordinary day of sitting in a classroom.
My students range from 9-11 years old. We are a 3rd-5th grade school, and we are located in a low income area where many of our students do not have access to computers or internet at home.
No matter what the future holds for each of my students, I want to give them the knowledge and opportunity to be whatever it is they desire to be, whether it is using their mind, their heart, or their hands. I want them to have confidence and drive to reach their full potential as an adult.
My Project
We need math folder games, a math manipulative toolbox, a measurement center, test prep practice cards, write and wipe boards and multi-step problem solving cards. The materials I am seeking will allow my students to experience math skills using hands-on items.
Using these manipulatives will allow my students to "see" the math skill in action and how it is actually applied.
Today's curriculum is focused on college and career readiness, so the items in this project will not only help students with understanding math concepts, but also how these concepts will be used in the future.
Motivation builds excitement which is a key component to student success. I believe the materials I have chosen will bring excitement and motivation to my students because they come in the form of games and challenges. Students will be able to actively work independently, with a partner, or in small groups to better understand concepts that they may struggle with. It will give them time to move around and collaborate with their peers. I know my students will be more excited and excel in learning math when not having to listen to their teacher lecture and just solve problems on the board.
So I ask you this. Do you think this would be the type of class you would like to learn in? Please help in making learning fun and exciting. My students and I would really appreciate the support.
