Movement Makes Marvelous Minds: Flex Seating for Reading
My students need flexible seating options to be fully engaged in class. Research shows that students learn best through movement. Chair balls, high stools, and stadium seats will provide my students with their best learning environment.
My second-grade students are an energetic and fun-loving group of kids who come from various social and economic backgrounds. We are lucky to live in a tight-knit rural community that feels very much like a family. My students are eager learners and I am delighted daily by their enthusiasm towards school. I love watching them learn and explore the world around them.
Each one of my students approaches learning in their own unique way, some learn best with their hands while others learn best through listening and watching.
They work hard to learn new topics and love showing me what they know. We are a classroom community that supports each student's unique needs and diversity.
My Project
The materials I am requesting for my students will allow them to be fully engaged in their literacy centers. Imagine spending 6 hrs of your day in a cold metal seat....not ideal! We are learning through research that providing students with alternative seating options helps them become more successful while choosing their seating options gives them ownership over their learning.
Students are more actively engaged and creative when they have the ability to move during independent work, and the option to choose a wworkspacethat best suits their needs.
Currently, my students have bean bag chairs, clipboards, bouncy bands, and cushions but we need more options in order to reach more students. I am asking for donations to purchase yoga balls, stadium seats, floor pads, lap desk as well as desk raisers with tall stools. All of these items will be placed in the students' literacy centers, and available all day for them to use during independent work. These tools will help students find their best learning space!! Students who work best standing up will choose the desk raised to standing level, while some students may prefer to bounce a little as they learn and will choose the yoga balls. Imagine being able to fully focus on your work because you have an outlet to move!! By donating to our classroom you are helping students put forth their best work, and be their most successful selves.
Businesses around the world have experimented with flex seating using a standing desk, cushioned chairs, and open-design cubicles. Let's set our students up for success now and the future.
