My lively bunch of 5th-graders come from a diverse range of economic standings in our rural school district. Family support and love are evident throughout the homes and classrooms, even when means are difficult.
Finding ways to excite a bunch of 11-year-old screen-obsessed kiddos can be a struggle!
The demand for entertainment with kiddos now is essential! 5th grade is an extraordinary year that is vital for students learning about themselves and how to take responsibility before transitioning to middle school.
I am blessed to teach all 5th-graders that are included in either general math or science! That's approximately 45 students! My students have a passion for learning when they know the purpose and feel the passion that has gone into planning and teaching the lesson.
My Project
Do you prefer to sit at a desk for 8-hours a day?! Then why do we ask kids with shorter attention spans to sit still all day? As a 5th-grade teacher that got rid of her desk in the first 6-months of teaching, I know that I am WAY more effective without it! I want that opportunity for my active bunch of growing 5th-graders.
Attention spans are at a rapid decline!
Some reports claim that the average attention span has declined by 50% in the last decade! Some even reporting as low as 8 SECONDS! When this is out of our student's control, how do we require them to learn all of the increasing skills that are being required of them?! Answer: ENGAGE THEM
I would love to include engaging flexible seating options in my 5th-grade math and science classroom. Within the last year of teaching an active attention demanding bunch (that I love!), I have noticed HUGE differences in behavior and academic achievement when they have been allowed to get out from behind those uncomfortable desks and MOVE!
I am asking for a variety of different options to meet a larger range of needs. The options chosen are options that have been used and voted on by the current students I have. Currently, I am using fidget bands and very soon will be including ball chairs. We CAN'T wait! Please help us get our engagement on!
