The students in my classroom have severe disabilities that impact every area of their lives including communication and independent living. Some have primarily intellectual disabilities that cause difficulties in speaking and language. Others have disabilities that impact their physical abilities as well including struggles in walking, independently navigating a school setting and performing basic life skills. Despite these disabilities, my students are very much like their peers. They long to have friendships and to be independent. They love movies, music videos and food.
My Project
Most of my students have autism and need extra movement breaks. Sitting on therapy balls not only provides opportunity for movement but also helps them build core muscles. After movement breaks, students are more focused and better able to learn and work. They can even sit on the ball during work tasks.
They also struggle with fine motor activities.
The speed locks are a perfect alternative to the typical locks that middle schoolers use. The adaptive scissor will increase independence with art activities. I am always looking for more opportunities for independence and to ensure that my students are as much like their peers as possible.
