This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are high-energy 7th and 8th graders, and all of the students in my class have been identified as being behind in their reading. We do a variety of exercises that include studying Greek and Latin roots, nonfiction article analysis, discussions, but their favorite is when we study Greek Mythology.
We are team "We Read Every Day".
For each student there is a different reason that keeps them from being on grade level, but we all work together to help each other increase reading levels and stay on track.
My Project
As a reading foundations teacher for middle school students, I do a lot of outside of the box thinking to help support the growth of each student, helping them to access grade-level material. My goal is to utilize their eagerness and energy in a manner that is highly productive.
We practice a lot of mindfulness, focused attention, and student choice, and I would love to offer to my students the choice to move while working at their station.
With that said, our class does a lot of digital work, which tethers students to their immovable desktop computers.
Our school district has made huge moves to encourage teachers to think outside of the box to serve our students. By offering my students the choice to use Stability Balls instead of chairs, I believe that we can channel their energy and eagerness into productive movement, which can in turn, can increase productivity and reading levels
