My Students

My students come to first grade, excited to learn, eager to explore, and ready to move. Sitting still at a traditional desk in a traditional chair for more than 10 minutes can be torture for some of my most enthusiastic learners.

Although most of my students are developmentally ready to become smooth readers and efficient mathematicians, their bodies need to move and shake, stretch and wiggle, and simply be active.

First grade is a magical year. With flexible seating, learning to read and unlocking the language of mathematics becomes a little more accessible for my 6 and 7-year-old movers and shakers.

My Project

Flexible seating options embrace my 6 and 7-year-old learners' energy and affords them the opportunity to move while learning. Recently, I had a project funded for two additional wobble stools for my classroom. I now have three wobble stools which are helping my busiest students get the sensory input their bodies need while helping their brains focus on learning.

Each day students review the flexible seating schedule in the classroom; adding more wobble seating options will help additional students get the sensory input they need to access their education, while allowing some control and choice in how they learn.
