I teach at a school with 100% free lunch. Many students only receive food while in school. Children come from homes that at times do not have basic needs such as electricity and water. Older children have responsibilities such as watching younger siblings and taking care of the home while parents work.
Exercise during the school day promotes learning and increases memory.
Being active during the day increases student participation and improves overall physical health. Students have so many factors that hinder learning, issues such as abuse, drug use, neglect, poor living conditions, lack of food, and lack of clothing. Most students live in single parent homes, and the absence of one parent creates much stress that is sometimes hard to bear. Even with all these issues, students do want to learn.
My Project
Students spend an average school day sitting at a desk. This leaves little time for them to be physically active. This also creates problems for students who find it hard to be still.
Movement while learning increases memory and improves physical health.
Pedal exercisers are an easy way for students to stay moving and continue to work. Most noise that is made in a classroom is from students who can’t keep their feet still. Using a pedal exerciser will help decrease excess noise and keep students focused on learning.
Jumping rope while reciting multiplication facts or saying rhymes increases students' memory. Physical exercise done before, during, and after learning a new concept increases retention of that knowledge. Both the pedal exerciser and jump rope will help students learn and have fun.
