My students need a learning environment that allows for movement and comfort, including stools, floor mats, wobble cushions, and some crates to store cushions and lap desks.
Each day, my students enter the room and the first thing they see is a sign that reads "This classroom is a...mistake-making, laughter-sharing, independence-building, brain-stretching sort of place! Everyone matters!" This is the type of environment that helps students develop into engaged and curious learners.
Each student is valued for his/her own unique qualities and learning styles.
They are all talented and special, and we speak often about how everyone learns in different ways and at different rates. We don't focus on scores, but instead on personal growth, and we reflect on our mistakes to turn them into learning opportunities. The students are empowered to take charge of their own learning in every way possible. I encourage my students to be curious and self-reflective.
My Project
Kids today are more active than ever! They crave movement and deserve to learn in an environment that strengthens their bodies and minds. It is proven that movement and choice both serve to increase student engagement, while also promoting a love of learning.
My students are always given choice and voice in our classroom environment.
Last year, I was able to provide a few exercise balls for students to sit on. They could also work on the floor or at tables or desks around the room. The ball seating had a positive impact on those that needed some movement to stay focused and actively participate in class. Unfortunately, our floor does not provide much comfort. The kids asked for a carpet, but we are not able to have carpets in my school. Instead, this year, I would like to provide them with foam mats, where they can stretch out and sit, or lay down to read a book, work on a project, or collaborate with classmates. Lap desks will provide the work space needed for those student who prefer to work on the floor. For those who prefer to work at desk chairs or stools, wobble cushions will be able to provide a core workout, while also providing the physical stimulation to keep students' brains active.
I am excited to have the opportunity to offer my students more choices in their learning. We are constantly reflecting on ourselves as learners. These materials will afford students the opportunity to have more movement, choice and voice, along with helping them reflect on how they learn best!
