Help me give my students flexible seating that will make them feel comfortable in their learning environment, promote teamwork, empower them with the benefit of choice and enable them to move while working.
Have you ever left the house without breakfast? Have you ever had to sleep in a bed that was not yours that you found very uncomfortable? Have you ever been in the cold without a coat? Many of my students have experienced this and more.
I teach in a high needs school in rural Georgia.
My students often cannot afford new clothes and shoes, let alone school supplies. They look to their classroom as their own, they take pride in its appearance, and we try to make them feel as comfortable as possible.
These kids are lovable and kind and crave the love and stability that comes every day at school. They are 7 and 8 years old and take pride in a job well done. They love to be complimented and to be successful at any level.
My Project
When you give students a choice, they feel empowered. Having flex seating in the classroom enables students to choose how they sit and which works best for them. It also allows them to move quickly if their surroundings are inhibiting their learning.
Physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.
Research has shown that simple activities in the classroom can boost academic performance. Studies also show that children who are allowed short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior.
Flexible seating allows students to move quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class. There are no large desks to move, allowing more time for engaging instruction.
