Our school is a Title 1 elementary school in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Our school encompasses a racially and socially diverse community of learners that is evident throughout the school building. Our students access their education through a dynamic team of educators and classrooms including, special education, ICT and gifted and talented.
PS 132 fosters a sense of commitment and dedication to each child, which is why after we learned that we are losing our recess yard, staff at PS 132 dedicated time to find the perfect sensory pathway for all of our students.
PS 132 believes in accessing education through kinesthetic exploration and that learning through play yields a happy and successful student.
My Project
At PS 132 we plan on utilizing our sensory pathway for children from PreK-5th Grade to help children learn to regulate through the use of movement, problem solving and focus.
The focus of our sensory pathway is to reach all diverse learners through a unifying forum that teaches children complex, multi-step tasks with an emphasis on sensory play.
According to Ms. Lake, our school’s Occupational Therapist, “the sensory pathway offers necessary proprioceptive and vestibular input that is directly correlated to increase attention and emotional regulation within the classroom. Simple ‘brain breaks’ with the sensory pathway helps prepare our students to acquire new information with a calm and focused body.” According to Ms. Hoefferle, our in house Speech-Language Pathologist, “a sensory path will help our children understand basic concepts which will allow them to learn to follow directions in the classroom which will increase comprehension and reduce frustration.” Join us to provide our students another modality to learn with.
