What would it look like if we redefined what it is to be a school? Our flex-school hybrid public charter school has done just that. My families choose to homeschool/flex-school for a wide variety of reasons...to personalize instruction, to have more schedule flexibility, and to incorporate more real-world experiences are just a few of the reasons you would hear from them. However, the one motivation they all have in common is that they want to be deeply involved in their child's learning and education.

The commitment my families and I share to their children's development is what connects us all and our differences are what makes us a vibrant group. My students and families are a highly collaborative group who support each other and are always looking for meaningful hands-on/minds-on experiential learning opportunities.
My Project
My students love to dance and listen to music. Our Fall 2019 project will be focused on social justice as we explore the concepts of equality, equity, and fairness in our own families and families around the world. As part of this project, I would like to incorporate not only dancing and listening to music but also creating music as we learn about families' cultures. Having instruments, dance ribbons, world music CDs and a CD player available both in the classroom and outside at breaks will make this possible.
With these music and dance materials, my students will not only be exposed to new music and dances from many cultures but will also have more movement and play options during breaks.
