My students need flexible seating options (bungee web chair, portable lap desk, and ottoman). When students have the opportunity to move, as well as to choose their seats, it increases their overall engagement in learning.
My students are creative, imaginative, talented, and are filled with the desire of learning. They thrive on taking ownership of their education, as well as having the opportunity to learn in a positive classroom environment.
Year after year I get the opportunity to teach a new group of amazing students.
One of my favorite memories at the end of each year is thinking about how my students worked together, and supported each other. Classroom meetings and working in groups are a huge part of our classroom community.
My Project
Over the past few years I have developed an understanding of how students choice and freedom in regards to seating can improve student engagement, participation, and achievement. By including flexible seating options into my classroom there are endless benefits and possibilities.
Research studies say that physical activity through flexible seating can lead to high academic achievement and also improved overall behavior as well.
This would be a tremendous asset for my students. Our classroom thrives on classroom meetings, community, and problem solving together, yet sometimes students struggle with staying alert and engaged in lessons. Herman Miller is a flexible seating company and they stated that when people are uncomfortable they have a hard time paying attention, and distraction can set in. The goal is to create an environment that sets all students up for success.
I would love to add the Bungee Web Chairs to the classroom library area. Students can use these chairs to read in, or complete other work while using a lap desk. The Surf Portable Lap Desks will be used to give students endless options for where they can complete their work. In my experience students enjoy working in a variety of spaces within the classroom, and this tool will make this student choice more comfortable. The Ottoman will be used as an alternate meeting space for when students are working in groups. This will give them a super cool and comfortable space to meet. Finally, the pedal exercisers will be used for students who need to move while they work. I would set the pedal exerciser under a student desk and allow them to pedal while completing their work.
