My students need a set of 42 sport items to get up out of their chairs and get moving! Maine winters are long, and we don't have any sports equipment for our preteens to use outdoors.
Staying inside under fluorescent lights isn't good for adults or growing teenagers. Please help us buy equipment for our middle schoolers to use outdoors during our daily break. We need to get them off of their devices and running around in the fresh air so they can grow into fit, healthy adults.
The majority of my middle school students are on free or reduced lunch, and they love to play on their school laptops and other devices.
Maine winters are long, but we try to take them outside every day so that they can get their Vitamin D and some fresh air. Our team's teachers believe that these teens need to get outdoors to run around, practice playing and working together and become healthy, young adults. Our public school is surrounded by green fields and it has two basketball hoops, but with only one soccer ball and one basketball, we can't get 75 kids engaged and fit.
My Project
You could help us purchase 6 basketballs, 6 soccer balls, 6 Frisbees and 6 footballs for our team. This would allow all of our students to play in large or small groups without intimidation or embarrassment. We often have a group of girls who would love to join in with a soccer game on the field, but with only one soccer ball, they hang on the sidelines and hope the ball comes their way. With enough equipment, the boys and the girls would have an equal chance to run around and let off some steam before returning to the classroom to work. When students get the exercise they need during the day, they are always more interested and motivated to participate in class.
Remember how important recess was when you were a kid?
Well, just because my students have gotten taller and louder, doesn't mean they don't need the chance to play. I want my students to be highly engaged, motivated learners and getting them physically active during the day will help move them towards that goal. About 1 in 3 Maine adults are obese, and I would like to prevent that from happening to my students by showing them how much fun it can be to get active.
