Most of my kids love to read, but sometimes it takes a great series of engaging books to pull other students in. American Chillers are a mix of action, mystery and creepiness!
Students who love Goosebumps will enjoy these books and even reluctant readers will get consumed by the stories.
American-themed, high interest books are essential to our international classroom!
Our diverse community has almost 70% of students coming from homes where English is spoken as a second language. One-fifth receives extra support for learning English.
We are a New York City Public School - nearly 60% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Our school's high poverty/high need classification has never stopped our students from doing their best. Over 90% of our Grade 3 students performed at Level 3 or above on the NY English Language Arts and Math Assessments - reflecting continued strong performance even against higher testing standards.
Our early childhood school's commitment to differentiated instruction supports students of all ability levels in every classroom by integrating English Language Learners (ELL), English as a Second Language (ESL), Students with Special Needs and General Education students.
My Project
"Michigan Mega-Monsters", "Terrifying Toys of Tennessee", "Savage Dinosaurs of South Dakota", "Virtual Vampires of Vermont"! With titles like these, my students will devour the American Chillers books. I would love to get two full sets of the series, so that many kids can be reading at the same time.
My 3rd grade students are working hard in class and read 60 minutes at home every night. I want them to have more options for this independent reading time. Books with exciting stories, strong characters and enough suspense to get their hearts pounding!
The Magic Tree House series is also popular for my kids and I'd like to add more American-themed titles, plus their Fact Tracker companions. We all love to escape in a good book and then these give an essential non-fiction partner to cement the learning. "Abe Lincoln at Last" will give them historical fiction through a new adventure with Jack and Annie. "Abraham Lincoln: Fact Tracker" will give them a deeper understanding of the history.
A new world can open up when kids make connections between what they know and what they read.
These high interest books will give my students a wide variety of adventures for their reading at home choices. I bet they'll also be very popular for our DEAR time in class: Drop Everything And Read!
