My students need paint, oil pastels and a wax melter to re-purpose the mountain of broken crayons in our art room to make batik, wax resist, and multi-colored crayons!
I am the new art teacher in a Title I school. Our school is bursting with enthusiasm from almost 600 students in our urban setting. Over 65% of our students are Hispanic, and most of these students are English language learners.
Elementary school is challenging to most Title I students, but it is even more so for those who are new English speakers.
Fortunately, our students are able to enjoy art as part of their elementary school schedule. Our art class offers a respite to these challenges and allows students to feel successful, regardless of their comfort level in language.
Our students are learning art with lessons that follow our national and state standards, but, more importantly, they are learning to use their creativity to solve problems (design), understand art (art history and appreciation), and make the world a more beautiful place!
My Project
I am the new art teacher at our Title I elementary school. Many of our students have never experienced art as more than crayons, markers, scissors, and glue. This year, that will all change!
I am incredibly excited to take our children on an exploration of art mediums!
We will do projects in several different mediums so our PK-6th graders will see that art is more than a coloring sheet in the classroom or a drawing. These children may never experience art again after 8th grade if they do not choose art class as an elective. By allowing younger children to try several different materials, they may discover a love for art and continue to nurture that love in the education choices.
By funding this project, you will ensure our students will be able to feel chalk and oil pastels glide across paper, learn to swirl just the right amount of water into their tempera paint cakes, and use recycled, re-purposed melted crayons to create beautiful art. We need paint, pastels, a wax melter and other supplies.
The whiteboards will help reduce paper waste as the students are able to do their first sketches on them before moving to paper. The whiteboards will also be a perfect "early-finisher" activity to keep our artists engaged while their peers are finishing a project.
We hope you will consider funding our project so our students will have an opportunity to explore these amazing art mediums.
