Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
During the day we get up and take breaks when we feel sluggish. Children would love to do this too. But in order to keep some semblance of order, schools have set times when students get breaks. This lack of movement really affects my students with Autism.
I am a speech language pathologist at a high school in Chicago. My goal for each of my students is to maximize their interactions and communication. Sluggishness is a conversation killer. Some of my students have even fallen asleep during periods of inactivity. How do I energize my students? How can I keep them engaged? How can I keep them from leaving the table for a short walk around the room?
I need to bring movement to them! But how? My cooperating occupational therapist, Jessica, introduced me to ‘move and sit' cushions. In Jessica's words: “These cushions have been specifically designed to allow children to move and jiggle in their seats without having to get up and leave their seats to seek "movement input". These cushions also promote and "alert" upright posture that facilitates increased attention to task.”
These crazy looking cushions really work! I have seen a number of my students improve their ability to listen and communicate effectively by implementing these cushions. The only problem is that we do not have them at my school. In order to implement these cushions as part of my communication sessions, I need your help. I am requesting 4 move and sit cushions that I can use in my speech and language groups.
This simple intervention will help my students to 'move it' so that they are ready to communicate. The next time you get up just to 'move' and recharge, think of my students. They need to move to recharge to. With your help they will not need to go farther than their seat to get the break and recharge that they need.
