I work as a Special Education teacher with students in grades K-5. My job has me working with struggling students who are below grade level in either reading and/or math and providing them with daily pull-out support in a small group setting. These groups are used to help bring them back to grade-level performance and to help them learn any missing content that they may have. These students all have mild to moderate disabilities that require more hands-on learning and a variety of instructional techniques.
I have the best job because I get the opportunity to work closely with so many of our students and get to celebrate weekly with each of them for their academic successes!
My Project
This project is for 6 wobble chairs for my special education classroom. I teach students in grades K-6 in special education and our room currently has wheeled chairs. Research has shown that students learn when given the opportunity to move as they learn. Wobble chairs will change the classroom experience for my students so they can stay focus on their learning. Having this type of option in the classroom will allow students to make important choices in their education by being in control of themselves and their environment. This type of seating will allow for students who struggle to stay still to better focus on their work in the classroom. Wobble chairs will allow for students to easily move their seats around the classroom. These chairs will also give them ample opportunities for grouping and collaboration while also offering students a seating option that differs from that of the traditional classroom.
With these resources, my students will be able to better collaborate and become more dynamic learners.
Having a variety of learning spaces inside one classroom will be incredibly beneficial to children who require movement and those who require stability. Students who work best with others will benefit and so will students who work best when seated away from others. Flexible seating is one of best ways to differentiate learning for my students, and this resource will allow me to do just that.
