The Sgt. Smith Middle School Band program provides every 6th grade student the opportunity to play trumpet or clarinet during the first semester of school. Through this experience students get to taste what it would be like to be in the full Band program, as well as opportunities to improve their skills in discipline, teamwork, character, and social & emotional learning. Many many times this may be the students only opportunity to experience the joy of playing a musical instrument.
Every musician has to start somewhere. My aspiring musicians start by learning trumpet and clarinet through or 6th grade program. These mouthpieces will provide them the startup equipment to get them going on their musical journey. For many of my students this may be the only opportunity to experience playing a musical instrument. We have the instruments but over time the mouthpieces have deteriorated past their ability to be used any longer. Without these mouthpieces the instruments can not be played. These mouthpieces will provide this opportunity for a greater number of students the ability to play the clarinet for many years to come.
