Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
According to the New York Times, music is one of the cornerstones of a good education. An article published recently by them stated that most successful people have one thing in common: Music! Imagine giving that same resource to students living in the poorest Congressional District in the country!
Everyday our students come to school, some in pants that might not have been washed in weeks.
Some are without pencils and books, and every time they see someone give them the resources to succeed, they prepare themselves to do so. It brings them great joy to have the resources that every school has, and as a teacher, it is half the battle. Our students are no less talented and no less capable, but they receive the bare necessities. It is time this changes.
My Project
At the beginning of the year, we had no musical equipment, but we diligently looked at legends and musical instruments of different ethnic groups to better understand the power of music and its place within our environment. Now, we hope to take this research and understanding to the next level by creating our own instruments and legends that reflect our environment and identity. With the software we wish to purchase, we will be able record our projects, and learn more about using computers. The software will allow them to engage in the different aspects of creating music, such as production, and mixing, as well as learn how to use our computers to make music. The software will also allow them to make instruments using sounds from the neighborhood. The microphone will allow them to record vocals too. Lastly, these resources will help build our students enthusiasm for music, and computers, as well as learn more about our environment. They hope to present their recordings to the public.
Our students are in desperate need of the right resources.
Every time someone brings something to our school it greatly increase students' opportunity, and stimulates our students' interests. There is an overall increase in academic study. We need new materials that are for the students of today, and are for the students of our neighborhood. These resources speak directly to the hearts of our students. Only eight percent of kids in this neighborhood move on to college, but it will change.
