I teach in a multicultural community in Fremont, CA, where many of our students are children of immigrants. This naturally shapes their experience in the education system of the United States. They are uniquely equipped to go into the world as the confluence of global values and learning. Their enthusiasm and drive is endless. Creative, curious and resourceful, they love hands-on and team building projects, while willing to take the risk to see their projects through.
Full of potential and dreams, my students strive each and every day to further their education.
Because they have a variety of learning needs, access to improved methods and resources would greatly enhance their learning trajectory over time. As a result, students' contributions to their communities will be more deeply felt as they grow.
My Project
I would like to have a classroom that will prompt a positive and collaborative learning environment. Flexible seating will give my students choices that work best for them, which includes where they sit and who they sit with during the day.
The varying shapes and size of furniture I have chosen will help facilitate greater student independence, reduce focus and attention issues, and teach students to be accountable for themselves.
For example:
1. High desks: Some students are more comfortable standing up.
2. Standard tables with yoga balls: Students who can't sit still often do better with yoga balls.
3. Extra low tables for students who prefer to work squatting on the floor.
4. Different kinds of chairs and wobble stools, to give students some variety and flexibility.. These can be moved to different areas when working with different groups of children.
5. Hexagonal tables for small cooperative group work or projects.
6. Books for the classroom library for offering a choice in reading material.
My hope is this arrangement will provide choices to my students and in turn motivate them in a positive manner.
