I am a special education teacher, and all the children I work with have some type of learning disability. Often times that is viewed by others as a lack of ability. The kids I work with may have challenges but they all have incredible abilities. They never stop to amaze me with what they can accomplish with the correct support and tools. These kids need someone who looks beyond the disability and challenges them in unique ways to help them move to the next level.
Many of the kids I work with come to me with low self esteem because they do not understand why they cannot read or write like their peers.
With the proper interventions, they soon love to read and write and their self esteem sky rockets. By using research and evidence based interventions, these kids have the ability to close the gap they have with their peers. Everything used in instruction is well thought out to the smallest detail to help them succeed. These kids need you to believe in them and help them succeed.
My Project
As adults, we get a paycheck for working and rewards for working really hard. Kids in school get rewarded by working hard and getting good grades. When a child has a learning disability, this academic reward may not exist. So what is their motivation when they work ten times harder than their peers with only one tenth the results?
In my class, I use a "Token Economy System" that gives students the opportunity to earn points toward a reward so all their efforts are not compared to others.
Instead, their own personal goals are measured by their personal results independent of grades.
Research has shown that when kids can see a reward for completing a task, they are more engaged and try harder to get to the end result.
