My amazing elementary school students attend an elementary school in a large urban city. These students are in a self contained communication-behavior classroom for students who have been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
My hard working students are impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Autism is a brain-based disorder characterized by social-communication challenges and restricted repetitive behaviors, activities, and interests.
As a speech and language pathologist working with my wonderful students it is important to have objects that are colorful and interesting so that my students want to communicate to have access to these toys and play with them. Not only does this type of therapy work on building language skills it also improves play skills.
My Project
These materials will be used in direct language and play therapy. Students will be motivated to request and make statements about items that they would like to interact with.It will also build on sound development, words and increasing the length of my students' sentences. Legos, dinosaurs, race cars and spinning toys and ribbons are all high interest level toys for my students.
Your generous donation to our project will improve my students' communication skills.
Being able to interact with the world
around them will truly change my students' lives. My students will also be able to interact with peers in their schools by developing play skills that are cooperative and not just in isolation.
