My amazing elementary school students attend an elementary school in a large urban city. These students are in a self contained communication-behavior classroom for students who have been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
My hard working students are impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Autism is a brain-based disorder characterized by social-communication challenges and restricted repetitive behaviors, activities, and interests.
Although our students have significant needs in the areas of academics, communication, behavior and play skills they also have many strengths in terms of working hard and being part of a large elementary school.
My Project
One area that my students in our autism classroom struggle with is communication. Evidenced based research has shown that when students are offered choices and have child-preferred activities that their overall communication improves and that there is a decrease in their disruptive behaviors.
These motivational items that have been requested will help my students with autism improve their communication and play skills.
My non-verbal students are much more likely to be actively engaged and motivated to request a toy or activity if they are interested in it than they are to label a flashcard that is not meaningful to them. Research has shown that these skills are most likely to carryover to other environments within a student's day if they are part of a natural consequence.
