Students love looking at pictures especially of themselves. I'd like to take that self-interest and have students use technology to motivate students to write. Students will be required to select a multimedia project in which they select from the following topics: Family, Community, Myself, or School. The project requires students to write at least 3 to 5 comprehensive paragraphs describing their topic and correlating pictures. For students who would like to add to their projects using their artistic talent, hand drawn pictures can be scanned into their writing projects. Students will use microphones attached to computers to record their voices reading their writing thereby forming their multimedia projects. These projects will be shared with the primary grades (Kindergarteners to Second Graders) and shown to parents during our annual Author's Fair held in April.
Since I've became a computer teacher, I have seen students more eager to complete their writing projects so they can type their final piece. Technology seems to be one of the major keys to reaching many unmotivated, uninspired students. With the use of digital cameras, microphones, and scanner, I hope to motivated students to write about their personal life, interests and hobbies while taking photos of their experiences. Students will use pictures to help them stay focus or as a form of illustration for their writing whether it be a picture of themselves, of their family, of their friends or a city landmark. In celebration, students will showcase their photos, pictures and writing through multimedia projects using programs such as Hyper-studio or Powerpoint.
Students' grades range from Kindergarten to Fifth grade. We are a STAR school which means we are one of the underperforming schools. Our students are from low-income families and many speak a second language such as Spanish and Cantonese. Our students are challenged socially as well as academically. Many students go to the local library to have access to a computer. Very few students have ever used a digital camera. As the computer teacher, I work with all the students in the school. I have seen the unmotivated learner become animated and interested in learning while using the computer. While in the computer lab, students who often misbehave strive to be on their best behavior so they can earn extra time on the computer. What a thrill it will be for the students to be able to see and hear their own production. I am hoping technology can be a key to learning for those students academically challenged.
