My students need a place that will motivate them to read. A low table for their listening device and alternative seating to give them choices for where to sit and read.
My experiences as a teacher are defined by the extraordinary students I meet and get to work with in my Reading Intensive classes. Although a lot of the students I work with struggle with the reading process, they are hard workers. The community my school is located in is a low income school. A lot of students live at or below the poverty level. Classroom supplies are hard to come by for them but that doesn't stop them from wanting to learn. They are eager to soak up whatever I put in front of them and adapt to changes within the classroom. They are supportive of one another and just an all around incredible group of kids. We are both a STEAM dedicated school and a TITLE 1 funded school.
My Project
In the middle of the year I created a Reading Nook out of borrowed pillows and buckets for my struggling and non readers in class. When I first met these students, they didn't like the idea of reading. But having a comfortable, separate area to go to with a book has been an amazing turn around! My non-readers/struggling readers ask to use the Reading Nook on a daily basis now!
Students who struggle with reading are not incapable of success.
We just need to find another path to help them. By giving them a space they are excited to participate in and learn. I have students who use a listening device to practice phonics and a low table like a coffee table would be great for them to put the device on rather than the floor. Alternative choices in seating also invite them to come over to the Nook, pick a book and read. Giving them those options that they are in control of helps them to take responsibility for their learning and desire to learn. They want to read!
I love every one of my students and my desire is to see them succeed in reading. Watching them discover something in a book or being able to compare it to a real life situations is amazing!! I want them to see that reading is fun and enjoyable. Please help my students to have a space that they can continue to go to and explore new worlds and ideas!
