Our school is located in rural Appalachia and serves students in Pre-K through 5th grades. Over half of students qualify for free and reduced meals, and many have been impacted by the opioid crisis. Many of our families lack the resources to provide their children with technology and extra books, magazines, or other reading materials at home to create a motivation to read and support the learning that occurs at school.
Students in our rural community need many opportunities to access quality high-interest and diverse texts at appropriate reading levels.
While our local libraries provide wonderful resources, many of our students lack the transportation or family support to access them. Donor's Choose Projects help me to supplement our meager budget to purchase supplies and materials that promote literacy in both the school and home environments for students who would otherwise lack these resources.
My Project
By the time they’ve reached upper elementary school, struggling readers have often lost the motivation to read. These students often have less access to texts within their home environments and are much less likely to request them as gifts for special occasions.
This project will provide 4th & 5th grade students participating in our reading intervention program with books to develop their own personal libraries in their home environments.
Students will be able to self-select books from a wide range of interest and readability levels as they progress throughout the program. I’ve seen firsthand how being able to earn their own books has helped motivate students to put forth more effort into the program in order to earn this reward. The books they earn have, in turn, increased their motivation to read for enjoyment. Both the extra effort applied to their intervention program and the increased time spent reading books of interest help propel students to higher levels of literacy achievement.
