The students in my classroom are some of the funniest, most interesting, and enjoyable people I know. Just like any other group of students, they come from a remarkable variety of experiences. It is a genuine pleasure to get to know them year after year.
In the modern world where information comes in the form of sound bites, I worry about students' ability to maintain the attention required to read with abandon.
It is my goal to foster a love of reading, so students can become lifelong readers, learners, and scholars.
My Project
Students in middle school are undergoing a dramatic change in their lives: social upheaval, academic and extracurricular demands increasing, and the natural changes in their bodies make it a particularly challenging time. I am looking to help them make this time more meaningful.
By providing extrinsic motivation for all students to read voraciously, students who are reluctant readers have the chance to develop a lifelong love of reading.
The items on this project will help motivate the students that need it most to become avid readers. I have selected a variety of items to appeal to a wide array of students: sports equipment for the athletic types; art materials for the creative dreamers; science kits for the analytic minds; and many unique items for the child at heart.
Throughout the year, students will read as many books from a list of 20 highly anticipated new adolescent fiction and nonfiction. After each book, students will complete a ballot where they write a review, summary, and rate the book. At the end of the year, they will be entered in a drawing for the prizes in this project. This project has the potential to inspire a group of students who identify as non-readers, and turn them into life-long learners.
