Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are diverse kids from different countries from all over Latin America. Our school is located in a low-income area in Houston, Texas and over 90% of the school's population is economically disadvantaged.
Many of my students come to school hungry and tired on a daily basis.
This is in part due to the fact that most of these kids only get one meal per day. This meal is usually received at school. When they go back home, food is scarce. As a result, our students come to school with very low energy almost daily.
Despite all of these challenges, I want to be able to provide something that will make their days much more bright and adventurous.
My Project
My students are kids who love learning and are starting to become technologically savvy students. They have been able to practice coding for the past three months with their newly acquired iPads and Chromebooks. I want to continue to help them improve their skills in coding by doing it in a more hands-on way. After the devastation caused by the recent hurricanes, I want nothing but positivity and excitement around my students. They have been traumatized enough by hurricane Harvey. With a treasure box, my students will be more motivated to come daily to school and complete their assignments.
With Osmo, students will command a character to do many different things without having to touch a tablet or a laptop.
This is great because students will be able to command without having to touch the screen of the tablet or the laptop. I also want my students to learn how to code because it helps them to think critically and to problem solve. These are skills very necessary in mathematics and science.
