Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The curious and creative second graders in my class live in a 90% low income community. Nearly all of them are English learners and some are special needs students fully included in my general education classroom. The diverse learners of my classroom are eager to learn about the world!
My students are fascinated by the globe in our classroom. They are constantly asking questions about the world. Because of their low income background, most of them have limited experiences outside of their neighborhood. While their peers in other communities travel to foreign countries during summer vacation, most of my students stay on their block. Many of them come to school with little exposure to print material from home. Despite these challenges, they have a wonderful curiosity about the world.
My students need a subscription to Time for Kids so they can grow to become informed members of society. The photos and stories in Time for Kids foster essential literacy skills and will provide my students with a window into the news and cultures of their country and the world. As my students learn more about their world, they will use a digital camera to create their own classroom news stories. They can share their photos and stories with the rest of the school as well as their families. This project will help my students become literate in news media and allow them to take ownership of and pride in the events in their own lives.
Your help will inspire my students to become lifelong learners. With your donation, fascinating stories from around the world will come to my students at their desks. Not only will your donation to this project benefit my students, but it will bring print material into their homes to share with siblings and parents. My students will learn that what they do at school is important and will take pride in sharing it with their community.
