This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a preschool special education classroom in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, serving students with Autism and other developmental disabilities. My students love to move, laugh, and learn! My students are primarily nonverbal communicators, and have different sensory and movement needs to help them feel safe and ready to learn. Research has shown that positive early experiences are crucial to later successes in life. We want to make this first experience with school a positive one for our students!

My Project
My students are in need of engaging, individualized materials to help them meet their goals.
My students learn best through hands-on learning, and with materials that are of interest to them.
My students love sensory activities, especially water play. The Design and Build Floating Blocks will help with their spatial reasoning and motor skills, while the Floating Alphabet will help with literacy. Also helping with literacy is the Alphabet Floor Puzzle, which will additionally assist with their social skills while they work together to complete an activity. Many of my students prefer real photographs versus illustrations, so these books will help motivate them to look at and learn from books.
The Lego StoryTales will help my students build their creativity and language.
My students find small, tight places calming, so the tent with the tunnel will assist them in calming skills, while also building gross motor and social cooperation skills.
These materials will help motivate and engage my students, help them self-regulate, and in turn- learn!
