Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The majority of my kids come from a low income background, but that is a very small part of who they are.

More importantly, they are smart, and resourceful, and clever and hilarious--they make me laugh every single day.

They are tough and street-wise, but they are vulnerable and sensitive, too. They are also struggling with change--our school has recently been declared a science magnet school and that, along with the new Common Core standards, has made for a very different school setting. They are struggling to adjust to the changes around them, but they possess the perseverance to come through the other side!

My Project

The students who come through my classroom are often struggling with issues that cause them to act out in angry, destructive ways in class. Others are overwhelmed by issues in their home life that cause them to disengage with school and withdraw from their education as early as elementary school.

I would like to help them see that education could be a way out of situations that often seem hopeless.

I would like to acquire some strategies that will help these students find their passion and reconnect with their education. This professional development can give me strategies to help reach these students and prevent them from disrupting the class so that all of my students can learn and discover their passions.
