My Students

As a teacher in an alternative PBL classroom I am always trying to find ways to show students how to relate what they learn to real world experiences. So often I hear my students ask why are we learning this, I will never use this in my life. If I can get them excited about learning, they will become life-long learners using the skills they receive in my class to go into the real world excited about learning in their everyday lives. Then they can use what they learned to become productive members of society, and they will become independent and not require society to take care of them. The best way to achieve this, is to create an environment where students take an active role in the learning process. Where the students have hands-on activities, having fun learning, and relating what they learn to their everyday lives. I would like to look outside the box and to keep trying new ways to achieve these goals.

My Project

I am currently starting a new position in an alternative school that focuses on Project-Based Learning in Science. The school has only been open for 2 years and needs many supplies.

I would like to start by getting materials that will motivate students by using hands-on activities that will create an enjoyable experience while at the same time focusing on the subject I will be teaching in the classroom.

This is why I chose games such as the Circuit, the Gravity maze games, and the Valence Plus game. Many of these games are hands on and will help to improve their problem solving skills. I am also going to create a club where the students learn how to solve different types of Rubik's cube puzzles. They give students a way to manipulate objects with their hands while at the same time improving their problem solving skills. I also chose posters because many of my students are visual learners and will be able to gain knowledge and inspiration from many of these posters. I will hang these around my classroom so they can be exposed to the many different Science concepts and inspirational statements. This will help me with the first step in providing an exciting environment to create a long time love of learning for my students!
