Do you remember what it was like the first time you found a book that you could not put down? A book that had characters facing the same challenges you were facing or a book that was so well written that you couldn't wait to read more?
My students are just beginning to get hooked on reading, and are asking for more books!
I teach in a low income district where more than half of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of my students do not have books provided at home, and rely on our classroom library for their reading material.
I am trying to instill a love of reading in my students, and it is working! My students have read through the books I have in our classroom library, and are asking for more titles.
My Project
The list of books requested are books that my students are asking to read. Many of these books are not available in our school library due to budget cuts. Many of the titles my students are asking for are from the ALA's best books of the year list. To be on this list the books, recommended for those ages 12-18, must meet the criteria of both good quality literature and appealing reading for teens. The list comprises a wide range of genres and styles, including contemporary realistic fiction that reflects the diversity of the teen experience, nonfiction that brings to teens an awareness of the world they live in and its history, and fantastical stories told in both narrative and graphic formats.
My student are anxious to read, and I am anxious to provide books that will keep them reading!
You can help my students by providing quality literature for our classroom that my students will remember for a lifetime.
Books can open a whole new world to students. By encouraging a love of reading in children, you are making an investment in their future.
