This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our classroom accommodates morning and afternoon preschool sessions. The morning preschoolers are 2 to 4 year-olds, all of whom have autism or another disability. The afternoon preschoolers are 3 to 5 year-olds, with a variety of different special needs. Many of our students are non-verbal and several are in wheelchairs.
Although they may not be typically developing, our students are just like all children in that they want to have fun!
They are curious, inquisitive and energetic. Unfortunately, our Title I school lacks the funds to provide the types of materials that our children need to engage and motivate them. Teachers, like myself, end up spending large amounts of money out of their own pockets to support the learning needs of our students. Thanks for your consideration in supporting my students!
My Project
My goal is to keep my students actively engaged throughout their preschool day by exposing them to a variety of developmentally appropriate activities and materials. The stretchy band I've requested will certainly help with the "active" part. There are lots of fun movement games that encourage motor and social skills that can be elicited with the use of this band. Furthermore, we are using PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) to teach communication skills. PECS requires A LOT of Velrco which is a supply we desperately need!
My students need exciting books and materials to spark interest and engagement.
If my students are not interested in the activities or materials in front of them, they will not be motivated to interact or communicate. I know my students love Pete the Cat as well as Brown Bear, Brown Bear (so much so that our current books are showing severe wear and tear) so these books are sure to be used in heavy rotation. They also love music so I know the sing along books will be favorites as well.
To support our new curriculum, and it's upcoming insect study, I've requested insect specimens and live caterpillars to literally help this unit come to life for my students. Part of our curriculum also encourages working on recall skills. To help develop this skill, I plan to take photographs of the students throughout their day and then project them onto our Smartboard. I'll use the requested apple adapter for this purpose.
