Hello, I am a first-year junior high language arts teacher whose students' motivation and retention levels can be greatly increased with your help.
As a first year teacher, I entered a district with severe cash flow problems. Even though my classroom contained few to no supplies, I was unable to requisition them due to our dire financial situation. Even after a difficult reduction in force this spring, it is unlikely we will be able to receive supplies for the 2009-2010 school year, as there will be insufficient funds for supplies and salaries alike. I strongly feel students should not be the ones to suffer from this difficult situation.
Finding ways to excite junior-high students about reading and English is a very challenging yet rewarding task. Several times this year, I have been fortunate to borrow an easel from a fellow teacher. During these few times, I instantly saw students become extremely motivated to participate in lessons. They would jump at any chance to practice skills on the easel, display their information on it, or use it to teach their classmates. Any supply that has the capability to generate this level of excitement and engagement is a tool my students need daily access to, as it is imperative students learn and achieve in reading and English.
