Have you ever met an 8 year old that doesn't like to play games? My students need to learn their basic facts and improve their place value skills but it doesn't have to be boring. I've picked out a variety of games that will guarantee fun and learning for everyone!
My school is in suburbs of a large city.
More than 50% of the students are low income and come from good families that are trying to make ends meet. I have a rich mix of cultures and languages including Mexican, Asian, and African American. 13% of the students are served by special education, another 15% receive speech and language intervention. Our school has a strong sense of community and we support and inspire one another.
My Project
In my geographical area we have a great number of rainy day recesses. This often leaves students looking for something to do that can be quickly assembled and easily understood. They need fun games that increase their base of knowledge but at the same time are exciting to play! I'll be using these games not only at recess but also during our math instruction to motivate my students to improve their math skills. I've chosen a variety of games that will build fluency in addition and subtraction skills, place value understanding and foundational math skills. Students will have a chance to pick a game, find a friend and learn all while having fun with new colorful activities!
Our school's focus this year is on learning math facts so our children will be ready to take on the challenge of higher level math.
I want to make this goal exciting and entertaining.
