Motivate & Engage My Math Learners!

Help me give my students some simple supplies to motivate and engage them like individual student dry erase boards and the colorful markers to go with!

My Students

My students are cute little 6th graders transitioning from elementary into junior high. They are squirrely and attentive. They love attention and try hard to complete tasks during whole group activities with lots of guidance but . . .

They haven't had a normal year of school since third grade.

They are lacking in basic math skills and are forgetting how to work on their own. They don't know how to persevere in the face of a difficult problem and often give up when they are asked to work on their own.

My Project

My students are amazing and they want to be successful learners, but due to the trauma Covid has inflicted on the last three years of their education, they know they are behind. They are intimidated by their lack of basic skills, slow to engage with their learning and easily frustrated by difficult tasks. I know that if I can motivate my students and get them to engage, to remember how to learn and how to practice, how to reach for understanding and to build their confidence, I can get them where they need to be.

My request is for a Motivation & Engagement Bundle!

There are simple things that grab student attention, that invite them in and get them excited. I am sorry to say that math notes are generally not one of these, but are ultimately essential. Doodle notes are researched-based and use both sides of the brain - left for the math and right for the doodling! Students get the content, but also the chance to embellish their notes with the color and design of their choice. I need both the notes templates and the coloring materials to make this happen!

Another component of the bundle is individual dry erase boards. I have had these in the past, and they encourage participation and engagement. Students even ask for more problems when working with little boards, but sadly I don't have them at my current school. Again, color is key. A little student choice goes a long way, so the request includes colorful dry erase markers to go along with the boards. I want my students excited about participating and practicing, this bundle will get students ready and willing to work!
