This summer, I attended an in-service for 7th grade Science teachers in which I was introduced to the use of motion sensors that can be connected to my computer. I was impressed with how they could be used to visualize speed and changes in speed. Seventh graders are still very "concrete" learners, and the graphs that these sensors produced made it easier to see how forces affect motion. I would like to purchase a class set of six motion detectors that I can use in a series of experiments to investigate motion, energy and forces. Students will be asked to present their initial understanding(s) of different concepts (such as, "How do you change the motion energy of an object?"), then do an activity using the motion sensors to gather data to either support or refute their idea. This equipment will be used year after, helping an average of 100 students a year to see technology the might not otherwise use. I have used other materials in the past to teach these same concepts to middle school students and NONE of these materials made the impact on learning that I feel these sensors can make.
