Motion and Forces Bottle Rockets

My Project

The rocket PBL is part of my Forces and Motion unit is part of the WCSD Gifted and Talented Magnet/AAP Physical Science course for 7th grade students. The understanding of motion and forces is impacts every student’s every day life and has affects the community in which they live. The decision to wear a seatbelt or wear a helmet, the purchase of which type of motor vehicle or how to drive it, or the desire to follow traffic laws like j-walking, using crosswalks, or reckless driving / biking may all be impacted by the understanding of motion and forces. The application of one’s understanding of motion and forces may also influence a student’s athletic performance and/or development. Through the use of several formulas, the ability to solve for a missing variable, the use of demonstrations and lab investigations students will be able to address the investigate the essential question “How do forces cause change in an object’s speed and direction of motion?”

The materials requested will provide students the ability to build and launch their bottle rockets.

The focus of the students outside the classroom will be on research and design instead of having to collect materials from their homes or neighnors.

My students are designated Gifted and Talented students by our district. While their performance on an IQ test may have been outstanding, it is not always easy to engage them and get them excited about learning. A major misconception about GT students is that they are highly motivated - this is often not the case! Exciting project based learning (PBL) lessons are a great way to get my students excited about a subject and remain engaged throughout the entire unit.
