Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the Athletic Director and 8th grade Physical Science teacher at a Title 1 middle school in Central Florida. Our students face many challenges in their home lives - school is their safe haven. Every school day our students receive free breakfast, lunch and dinner and some are provided food to take home on the weekends. We have a school that is transient and many of our students live in hotels.
The athletic department serves as an escape for many of our students.
Our coaches go above and beyond to provide for our students. We have a program called Most Valuable Viking where teachers adopt an athlete. Teachers create relationships through this program and attend games to cheer them on. Our student's parents sometimes work multiple jobs so they are not able to attend games.
My Project
With the challenges our students face in their home lives, teaching at our middle school is not easy. Our students have faced many heart breaks and disappointments in their lives which makes trusting adults difficult. The staff members at our school become surrogate parents for many of our student athletes by providing them that extra bit of love and encouragement needed.
The teachers who are most successful in our school are the ones who build relationships with their students.
The Most Valuable Viking Adopt an Athlete program helps to open that door. Teachers choose the athlete(s) they wish to adopt and then are given a button with the athletes photo on it to wear. This teacher then becomes a person who can help encourage that student in their academics.
