Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Although I might get frustrated when I see a student not paying attention in math class, I can't help but smile when I see that they are sneakily reading a book underneath their math notes. I want students to love reading so much that they can barely put down their current reading book!
My students put a smile on my face every day.
They are vibrant 15 and 16 year-olds who are working hard to prepare for college. We are working to overcome the achievement gap, and providing academic enrichment materials will surely help my students. We work together at a small charter school in northeast Los Angeles, and I want to do everything in my power to help my students build their academic skills, including literacy, to be college-ready. Most of my students come from low-income homes, so they aren't able to buy the newest teen bestsellers. I want to ensure they have the opportunity to read books that other teens love in order to build their reading skills and fall in love with reading.
My Project
Each morning, I meet with my advisory (homeroom) students. These students mean so much to me, as I get to mentor them and support their academic development. Once a week, we have Sustained Silent Reading (SSR). It's exciting to see that many students have gone from reluctant readers to engaged consumers of pages and pages of reading material. I give students the opportunity to check out books from my class library, and I can't wait to provide many new options for my students!
With this project, my students will have the opportunity to read many popular teen books and bestsellers just like other students their age.
They will have the chance to read books like The Hunger Games and The Fault In Our Stars before all of the new movies come out. When we have SSR each week, students will have many more options to choose from so that they can learn to love reading!
