Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fourth grade students are diverse and promising young citizens. Still, the odds are against them.
At my school, 98% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
Statistically, kids with the same challenges in our district struggle to graduate. But the good news is that learning opportunities in early grades improve the likelihood of their success in adulthood.
When we invest in my students, we invest in the future. I aim daily to provide students with targeted instruction that meets kids where they are so that they can reach beyond their temporary limitations. When I have the right materials, I can help students learn in more unique and creative ways that match their individual needs and potential.
The materials that I request in this grant build steps to that effort.
My Project
My kids are begging me for the books in this project. They are not the books that I'm choosing; they are the books that the kids trade eagerly amongst themselves when they get the chance.
My goal is to balance the reading that I assign for student enrichment with the books that they want the most.
Dog Man, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Dork Diaries make up the majority of these requests. My students' families want to provide their students with these collections, but have a difficult time finding the extra cash to do so. If we can find a way to put these publications in the hands of my students, they will gleefully read them and grow more skillful as a result.
