My students need morning activities that will engage their critical-thinking skills right away, such as Blokus Strategy Game and SmartGames IQ 3-Pack - IQ Twist, IQ Fit, IQ Link . My goal is to get my students working on engaging activities that will move beyond the typical morning work, while providing choice.
I have the privilege of teaching an amazing group of 41 fourth grade kiddos. This is my fourth year in the classroom, and my heart is full. Seeing each student succeed at their own rate brings me the greatest joy—truly. My school has a poverty rate of 40%, so keeping my students engaged and motivated to learn can be extremely challenging. I know that if I can keep them interested, focused, and show them that learning is FUN, there is a lot that can be accomplished.
My Project
Morning work is necessary in the manner that it engages students in some form of learning from the moment they enter my room. However, my desire is to provide meaningful work that isn't busy work, and that offers choice in activity options.
Typical morning work is often a quick worksheet that students complete at varying times which means some students finish well before it's time to check their work while some students are struggling just to answer the first question.
Making the shift to morning tubs that include activites such as IQ Twist, Think Fun Math Dice, Tangoes, Blokus, Math Fluxx Cards, and more will not only deepen critical thinking skills but will also cater to the varying needs/ability levels of my students.
