Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In addition to the awesome 4th graders I get to teach everyday, I am also our school's softball coach. Each year I get to work with a great group of girls from the 4th-6th grades. They usually come to try-outs not knowing much about the game, with little or no equipment in hand, and by the end of the season they grow tremendously. It's definitely very rewarding to see them take on this new sport and end up loving it so much!
Many of our students have a hard time affording the basic tools needed for the classroom, let alone proper equipment for extra-curricular activities.
Our school does our very best to provide them with those tools and the additional equipment they will need to succeed in school and sports, and I would love to be able to contribute to that!
My Project
When a student wakes up in the morning, they should WANT to come to school...they should CHOOSE to come to school everyday. I would like to introduce my students to Morning Choice. A time where they get to choose from a selection of activities that will elicit excitement, creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration while they complete tasks that promote 21st century skills.
I want to promote teamwork and critical thinking!
In my first years of teaching, I've been guilty of providing my students with some sort of morning work or warm-up worksheet. Half of the time, only half of them are actually getting something out of this work. With Morning Choice the students will choose an activity that they can work together and collaborate on. From STEM activities to artistic expression. Challenging puzzles and games that are fun and yet still stimulating.
I would like to set the tone for the day and establish a positive classroom environment, where my students can be successful in the rest of their day!
